Aigars

Name : Aigars Skrivelis

Age : 30

Nationality : Latvian

Shirt Number : 21

Age you first played : I first started to skate on ice at around age 9 which is actually quite late. It’s not uncommon for children now to start at age 4, or even age 3! Back when I was a child, winters were longer and started earlier, I started to skate with my backyard mates on a big frozen lake which was 200 metres (218 Yards) from my house.
We where playing all sort of games on the ice for example tag.  But as time moved on we started to play little hockey tournaments between ourselves. During Christmas school holidays I left the house in the morning and came back in the evening, starving to death, having being on the ice all day, everyday. When school started back we would head straight to the lake after school and stay as late as we could.

Teams You’ve Played For : My first Junior team was the “Smiltenes Vanagi”, or SMILTENES HAWKS. We lost pretty much every game we played! Simply because we could only practice during the winter outside, when it was cold enough for our Coach to pour water on our outside rink to freeze it. But we played against many junior teams from the capital city Riga where they practiced all year around on indoor ice rinks. They were way better than we were, and I quickly wanted to be as good, if not better. So at the age of 15, I begged my Mum to let me attend Hockey School in the City , which meant living there alone. Eventually she agreed and I moved to the City. My second team was “Latvijas Berzs” (Latvian Birch).

Position : Left Wing or Centre

Highest Level Played : With Latvian Birch I played on the First Line and had some nice wins against some big teams featuring players who now represent our National side.

Best / Most Memorable Hockey Moment : Coming Third Place in Latvian League 2 with my Senior team. Bearing in mind that League 1 was the Pro’ League.

Most Embarrassing Hockey Moment : Was with the Hawks, we lost 41-0. It was shocking! We played against a team with boys in the next age group up, and couldn’t even get the puck out of our half!

Favourite Piece of Kit : I have two choices. My Stick, an Easton V5E, and my Skates, the CCM RBZ 80.
